Loss of hair can be caused by several different things. Stress to the body caused by a major illness or surgery can cause a temporary loss of hair. A shift in the hormone levels of the body may attribute to hair loss. An increase or decrease in the thyroid hormone as well as female and male hormones can cause hair loss. This is why during pregnancy many women notice an increase in the fullness of their hair. On the other hand, men see hair loss because of an increase in dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
To restore the hair loss there are currently 4 options. The first option is a hair transplant. This procedure can be expensive and time consuming if you are an eligible candidate. The second option would be to get fitted for a wig, hairpiece or hair weave. Even with the latest advances in producing these, a large majority of the people are ultimately not happy with their appearance. The next method for slowing or preventing hair loss is seeing your doctor and getting a prescription for a drug called finasteride which is only for men. The drawback is it may take up to 6 months before you can tell if one of these medicines is working and it is expensive. The last option is an over the counter product that you apply topically to the intended area.
Some studies have shown that the active ingredient, minoxidil, rejuvenates hair growth by increasing the blood supply to the hair follicles. Other experts say that minoxidil works by stopping the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. And as mentioned earlier, DHT is the hormone found in the highest concentration in men that primarily causes Androgenic Alopecia or male/female pattern baldness. Minoxidil therefore is thought to block the production of DHT which stops your hair from further thinning and actually can causes the regrowth of your hair. This means that you may be able to see hair regrowth pretty soon after you start to use the product.
Although DHT levels are lower in females, clinical trials have shown that up to 40% of woman with hair thinning may notice a benefit from using this product. Minoxidil was originally developed as an antihypertensive medication but hair grow was an undesirable side effect. Since then it has gone through extensive clinical trials and has been approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for controlling hair thinning in both men and women.
Some products formulated for men also add saw palmetto and azelaic acid. The saw palmetto works with the minoxidil the decrease DHT production leading to healthier hair. Azelaic acid naturally causes the hair to be repaired faster leading to quicker restoration. Hair restoration products for women do not contain saw palmetto or azelaic acid due to possible harmful effects during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Research has shown that male pattern baldness or Androgenetic Alopecia is often the cause of male hair loss and this is linked genetic but minoxidil will work because it attacks the problem at the root of the cause.
Minoxidil is available as an easy to use extra strong 5% topical solution that gets the active ingredient directly to the area where it is needed and takes very little time to apply. In addition, an oral supplement is taken as 2 capsules daily.
Therefore, using minoxidil topical lotion seems to be a logical chose for both men and women who are trying to slow their hair thinning or attempt to regrow their hair. The addition of saw palmetto and azelaic acid to the men’s product gives an increased benefit when DHT production needs to be more aggressively suppressed.
